Searching For The Perfect First Home
Jill & I had dreamed of buying a home every since we got married. We knew we didn't want to max out our budget, nor did we want to buy the nicest house on the block. The goal was to find a place we could put our personal touch on. I've grown-up with a fairly handy-man for a Dad who's done a lot of great things to his house, so I was hoping some of that had rubbed off on me over the years of playing apprentice in the shop and Jill & I could make a dream home of our own in someplace that needed some TLC and possibly add some value to it while we're at it.
In the area we decided on, more often than not, homes listed out of our price range. There's an old adage that says don't buy the biggest, best house on the block, but to move into the neighborhood we wanted it was both a goal and a requirement. What we wound up with was a home built in 1924 that hadn't seen ANY touch ups or more than basic maintenance since the mid to late 70's! This place, with some minor cosmetic upgrades would have placed well out of our price range. That means it has a lot of potential, but also means it will need a lot of hard work. For now this profile picture will have to suffice. I'll give a little walk through in the next post soon to follow, and lay out what all is in store for us. To be honest, this first post is very long over due. We bought the home at the end of May 2010 (so are almost coming up on a year!) and feel like we've barely scratching the surface! As we go feel free to leave comments or share similar stories as I'm sure we're not the only ones to take on such a project. Maybe we've bitten off more than we can chew, but you be the judge.
